Signs the Operating Hardware Has Had It
A sash that falls shut
If it will not stay up without something propping it, the balances have failed.
Painted or swollen shut
Common on original wood sash. Forcing it usually damages the frame further.
Broken locks and torn screens
Hardware that no longer latches is both a draft and a security problem.
Draft at the meeting rail
You feel air at the point where the two sashes overlap, with the window locked. The weatherstrip is gone.
A slider you have to lift

Usually yes, if the opening is not too wide for a sash to swing safely and there is nothing outside it would hit. It is the most common style change we do here.
Yes. Sleeping rooms need a minimum clear opening for escape and rescue. Because a casement swings fully open it often clears egress at a smaller unit size than a slider will, which occasionally decides the style for you.
